JAKE MACKINNON

Agriculture Information Supervisor

PEI Department of Agriculture

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology
  • Previously involved in the ALUS and Agriculture Stewardship programs
  • Agri-environmental background collaborating with producers and watersheds
  • Island beef producer

As a young farmer, Jake is passionate about helping Island farms succeed whether they’re just starting out or continuing to grow.

Jake is the Agriculture Information Supervisor and provides knowledge-based support to producers across Prince Edward Island. He works with the Agriculture Information team to deliver practical guidance to help producers make timely, informed decisions on implementing beneficial management practices for their unique operations.

Jake was recently involved with the development of the newly launched Future Farmer Program 2.0, a program he is really excited to see continuing to evolve to fit young farmer’s needs. He believes the program is a key part of helping new producers establish successful, sustainable farms as they enter the industry.

Raised on a family cow-calf operation with a focus on building soil health, Jake has a grounded understanding of the challenges farmers face and a strong commitment to clear, accessible communication. One of his favorite aspects of the role is building relationships with producers and visiting the diverse variety of farms on PEI.

Jake dedicates his time to maintaining open channels with producers, industry, and other partners to help ensure Island farms are working towards beneficial management practices with a holistic mindset, balancing profitable, sustainable farm enterprises with healthy soils and communities.

“Producers face a variety of challenges when making management decisions and I’m proud that so many of our Island farmers make soil health and conservation a top priority.”
